SUN MOUNTAIN LODGE AWARDED "WINE RESTAURANT OF THE YEAR" FOR 2010 BY THE WASHINGTON WINE COMMISSION!
WINTHROP, WA ~ April 2010
For the past eight years the Washington State Wine Commission has been honoring restaurants that show strong support for Washington state wines and that practice and excel in high professional standards in wine service. For 2010 the winner of the “Washington Wine Restaurant of the Year” award is Sun Mountain Lodge, gaining recognition for our “tremendous enthusiasm and support” of Washington state wines for more than two decades. Dining Room Manager and Wine Director Don Elsing has put together a collection of 135 different Washington wineries featuring over 375 different varietals and vintages. He has focused on the smaller, boutique style wineries which produce 50- 200 cases of each varietal per year. General Manager Brian Charlton called this award “A great honor for Sun Mountain Lodge. Washington wines are some of the best in the world and we feel very strongly about showcasing them here at the Lodge.” To commemorate the award, Sun Mountain Lodge received a beautiful custom-blown glass sculpture designed by Seattle-based glass artist Jesse Kelly, which will be displayed outside our 5,000 bottle wine cellar.
Sun Mountain Lodge is a unique resort nestled close to the majestic North Cascade Mountains overlooking the pristine Methow Valley near Winthrop, and Washington State’s only AAA Four Diamond rated resort for both the resort and dining. In addition to the award-winning restaurant, the Lodge also has the Wolf Creek Bar & Grill, library, gift shop, exercise room, 5,000 bottle wine cellar, full service spa, and activities center. Spring through fall, Sun Mountain Lodge offers a wide range of activities. Over 100 miles of trails for hiking, mountain biking and horseback riding lace the countryside. Fly fishing, river rafting, canoeing, tennis, golf and an entertaining children's program are also available. During powder season, Sun Mountain Lodge turns into an award winning cross-country ski resort.

Sun Mountain Lodge Story Ideas
Local Artisans
With part of their mission and service philosophy to employ
locally and support area artisans, Sun Mountain
Lodge is playing a vital role in helping the local economy of
the Methow Valley - particularly the local crafts
people and artists - a group generally hard hit during the current
economic downturn. Local artisans are
responsible for most of the furnishings in the guestrooms at the
AAA Four Diamond Sun Mountain Lodge with
spectacular Northwest signature style. Two furniture makers
have crafted beds, armchairs and other furniture
bringing the great outdoors inside. The local blacksmith from
Winthrop created curtain rails, towel bars and
door handles as fanciful decorative elements. Fine fabric is
pure magic to a local seamstress from Twisp who has
created duvet covers and throw pillows like works of art. The
walls have been sponged and fresco-painted by a
local painter and the local artwork (originally commissioned
by the Lodge at the time of its grand opening) hangs on the walls.
Wining and
Dining
Northwest atmosphere and dining at its finest. From naturally
grown herbs and vegetables right off the
Sunny M Farm to tenderloin of Washington state beef topped off
with mushrooms foraged from the
Cascade Mountains, the dining experience at Sun Mountain Lodge
promises to delight the palette. The Lodge
presents award-winning chefs, hearty and sophisticated dining,
and a boisterous wine list including a 5,000 bottle cellar,
which features many award-winning Northwest wines - some of
which can only be found at the Resort.
Opened in 1998, the wine cellar was designed to mirror the classic
cave cellars of Europe and features stone
and ironwork by local craftsmen. A large cherry wood dining
table, in the center of the cellar,
seats up to 14 guests for special occasion dining.
