With over 475 different species, Washington
State is one of the finest bird watching destinations in the U.S.
And
the Methow Valley near Winthrop, home of Sun Mountain Lodge, is
one of the best locations in Washington.
The Beaver Pond at Sun Mountain
Lodge is featured on the Audubon Society''s map, "The Great
Washington State Birding Trail, Cascade Loop". For a free

According to Opperman, this is "a prime birding spot with
open water, marsh, riparian vegetation, and coniferous
forest."
Some of the sightable species include Barrow's Goldeneye, Blue
Grouse, Rufous Hummingbird,
Belted Kingfisher, Pileated Woodpecker and Western Tanager.

"The Methow is part
of the Okanogan birding region of north central Washington. If you like
birding in wide open spaces, give north central Washington a try. The
region accounts for less than two percent of the state's population.
Of people, that is. When it comes to birds, few other places in North
America have as many breeding species (about 200). Migration and winter
bring yet more birds; in all, more than 300 species occur in the region."
-Hal Opperman, A Birder's Guide to Washington.
